The Story of our Butter Boxes
Since 2020, we’ve produced a batch of butterboxes every year. Each box is made from a single block of wood, so the boards have to be just right. It took us some time to find a sawmill that could provide the exact timber dimensions we need. Eventually, we came across a family-run mill in Burgenland. They source old trees from the surrounding region, mill them carefully, and dry the wood at a pace that respects the material.
Every year, Jakob drives out to select the timber for the new batch. The wood changes from year to year, depending on what the mill has available. All of the trees are old and carry their own unique stories. This year, we were lucky to get a pear tree from a nearby farm, over 70 years old and beautifully matured. In other years, we’ve worked with cherry, walnut, maple, oak, and apple - all from the region. Each wood brings its own quiet tone and a subtle contrast to the colour of butter.
The design of the butter box stays the same: simple, understated, and made to get better with use. Made from a single piece of wood, the grain flows from the body to the lid, giving the box a seamless, honest form without joints or unnecessary details. Inside, there’s a small notch for the wooden butter knife that comes with each box.
Together, the material choices and minimal design create a piece that is functional, timeless, and rooted in the qualities of the wood itself - nothing more than needed, and nothing less.
